Making Mention of Mothers

Making Mention of Mothers

Reading through the lineage of Jesus
what comes to my mind is how
well planned the timing of Jesus birth is.
-fourteen generations from Abraham to David
- fourteen from David to the Babylonian exile
and then another fourteen from the Babylonian exile
to Jesus Christ, our Messiah’s birth.
However,
something that stood out to me was
that amongst all of the men mentioned
- the fathers
there are only a few mothers mentioned.
Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah
[whose mother was Tamar
with no mention made
of how it came about she became a mother]
Salmon was the father of Boaz
[whose mother was Rahab
-no mention made of her coloured past being redeemed
when she was rescued by a red rope dangling down
from her window from the walls of Jericho]
Boaz was the father of Obed
[whose mother was Ruth
-a foreigner who chose to follow her mother-in-law
in love]
David was the father of Solomon
[whose mother was Bathsheba,
the widow of Uriah
-making no mention of adultery]
… Jacob was the father of Joseph
[the husband of Mary,
Mary gave birth to Jesus,
Who is called the Messiah]
This is how Jesus the Messiah was born.
His mother, Mary,
was engaged to be married to Joseph.
But before the marriage took place,
while she was still a virgin,
she became pregnant
through the power of the Holy Spirit
and when we fast forward her story we see that her Son
Jesus made provision for His mother when He left this earth
making me realise that mothers and grandmothers
are important
even if we feel invisible
and what a comfort it is to know
that God’s grace and mercy extends way beyond
the mistakes we made, make and will make
because He sees deep into the depths of us
where no one else can see
making me realise that
reaping righteousness is our reward
for right [righteous] choices we make
that ripples down to all our seed
because the reality is
we start off inspired
but as mothers get tired
and we often wonder whether the things we do that go unnoticed
will reap any benefit?

Father God,
please help me to sow seeds of righteousness into ‘my seed’
You have given me to plant
so they will know Your Garden of Grace
and not the garden of Gethsemane
because You have already been there.

Galatians 6 vs 9,10
Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a good harvest if we do not give up.
Let us not grow weary or become discouraged in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap, if we do not give in. 10 So then, while we [as individual believers] have the opportunity, let us do good to all people [not only being helpful, but also doing that which promotes their spiritual well-being], and especially [be a blessing] to those of the household of faith (born-again believers).

So let’s not allow ourselves to get fatigued doing good. At the right time we will harvest a good crop if we don’t give up, or quit. Right now, therefore, every time we get the chance, let us work for the benefit of all, starting with the people closest to us in the community of faith.

And don’t allow yourselves to be weary or disheartened in planting good seeds, for the season of reaping the wonderful harvest you’ve planted is coming! 10 Take advantage of every opportunity to be a blessing to others, especially to our brothers and sisters in the family of faith!
