African Rain

African Rain
in the late afternoon hours,
starts slowly….

Big drops pound the dry ground
-Pot shots from a pellet gun!
leaving little dents in the dust….

The more vigorous the rhythm of the rain becomes,
as the beat begins to build of invisible African drums,
the deeper the indentations left in the dust.
Dancing with abandonment
until the accumulation of sounds soak into mud puddles
just for us to jump in
as one gets lost in the loud lightning
accompanied by thunderous clapping as it cracks
through the canvas of the sky!

Africa has no fear.
The thunderstorm is over just like a jolt
-the world washes smiles across senses as we smell the scent of fresh forests
wrapped up in the aftermath of the refreshing rain.
It becomes soft in our souls as quiet returns
as we see freshly washed leaves dripping droplets down….
Little plants now have an opportunity to peep out in wide-eyed wonder
and experience the exhilaration of African rain!
Little birds descend from their rain dance, fluffing their feathers...
We hold our breaths to listen to the distinct distant drumbeats;
we know we will be welcoming
the miracle of music
as it interrupts a sun filled afternoon again
soon
filling us with words of wonder in our inner worlds
as it pours a piece of peace, in liquid form, into the pores
of the old earth’s skin;
seeping through the surface
comforting the cracks
unweathering the wrinkles
smoothing the soul
soothing the spirit
until love laughs out loud
delighting in the beautiful face of the African afternoon;
glistening and glowing
radiant and ravishing….

As the early evening erupts in more applause
a rainbow bows low before She goes,
leaving the stage empty until the next performance
of magnificence!
