African Sunset
The burnt orange sun
sets the sky ablaze
as veld fires pant
across the dry yellowed grass
hissing as they leap along the landscape!
The angry flames paint the bleak, bland fields
a shade of deep black
and tears
spill from ones eyes
from the scent of smoke....
- the taste of Africa on our tongues
is sweet and spicy simultaneously
perhaps even a little bit salty...
the flavour always there
like the 'burning bush' in the Bible.
Somehow the familiarity
of it all
as the scene is set before us
captures ones heart
and it knows it's at home...
as dry dusty roads
run alongside streams of sunflowers
on the farmlands
animals seeking refuge from the scorching sun
in the wispy shade of a lone Doringbos....
The rhythm of African blood
runs through our veins
tirelessly like rugged bushmen
mingling the hot sweaty
evening with smoke
bottled into an African cologne
an incredibly unique fragrance
that consumes
all who have been birthed from African soil.....
dust to dust
