Vigilance

Since the beginning of time
the enemy of mankind has messed with our minds
sowing seeds of doubt
repeating the well-worn words
he has used for centuries:
did God say?
did God ‘really’ say?
trying to get us to
-doubt God
-doubt God’s goodness
-doubt God’s intentions towards us…
tempting us to take what God has withheld
for our protection
-he points a bent, bony finger at our Heavenly Father
with a huge question mark,
trying to taint His character.

The first account of temptation in the Bible,
sketches the scene for satan’s scheme
as he tempted Eve
and even though we know we are the apple of God’s eye,
aware of his age old strategy,
sadly we still succumb to temptation
when we believe
that we need more than what our Heavenly Father
has provided…
Our Father fenced in this forbidden fruit of the flesh
specifically,
because He knew that once bitten into,
the bitter aftertaste of giving into temptation
would taint us for eternity
if we believe the lies
that slither around the garden of our minds
patiently prowling
waiting to pounce on its prey
and devour us with doubt.

The only way to resist him
is to stand firm in our faith
doing what Jesus did:
reminding him of what is written in the Word
when he attempts to tempt us
whether it be in the garden with fresh fruit
or in the desert places with distorted mirages.
We need to beware because
daily, throughout the whole world
these old words still sting
unsuspecting, tired travellers…
