Memories of My Mommy

My Mommy,
I wish I could remember the sound of your soft voice,
I’m so sure you spoke softly to me…
I’m certain you used tender tones
as you dressed your daughter
-your little girl…
You had two boys
who I know you loved
with all your heart as well
because I love them so much
-my two older brothers…
but I was your baby girl...
sadly, your other daughter departed
before I was born…
I often wonder what life would have looked like
-if you’d lived
-if my older sister had lived
how different things would have been…
I know I’m not meant to dwell on what was
but the memory of you blowing bubbles in the bath for me
and dressing me in matching outfits;
dainty dresses,
special shoes and sandals
and
beautiful bonnets and bows
as well as knitting me little hats with a hole
my ponytail could poke through
and catching a glimpse
of a bangle on my arm and a tiny ring on my finger
in an old photograph,
makes me feel your love
as if yesterday stepped into today.

I still miss you Mommy
and on days like today
I just can’t help wondering
what it would feel like to feel your soft arms
wrapped around my world.
